Dr. Jessica Bundschuh: The Mesh of Companion Species in Sara Baume’s A Line Made by Walking

Centre for Irish Studies at CU FAinvites you to the discussion of A Line Made by Walking that will take place on 29th March 2023, 15:50 – 17:25, Room 111,
Faculty of Arts, Charles University, nám. Jana Palacha 2, Prague 1.

In the discussion, we will investigate how Sara Baume’s novel establishes nonhierarchical relations across species, organisms, and the division between the organic and inorganic to create deep interdependency in a fully-wrought fictional ‘universe.’ The theoretical approach borrows from Timothy Morton’s “The Mesh”: “Mesh can mean both the holes in a network and the threading between them. It suggests both hardness and delicacy … a complex situation or series of events in which a person is entangled.”

Dr. Jessica Bundschuh is a Lecturer in English Literatures & Cultures at the University of Stuttgart with publications in Review of Irish Studies in Europe, Ecozon@, Poetics Today, The Paris Review, and the most recent volumes of Études irlandaisesEFACIS: Interfaces and DialoguesLiterary Matters, and An Introduction to Poetic Forms.
